Adaptation
Yes, No, Maybe: Yes!
Nicolas Cage, Meryl Streep, Chris Cooper, Rheagan Wallace, Tilda Swinton
This is a haunting movie - intense, original, bizarre, funny, intelligent, weird,
tragic and wonderful. It stays with you long after the credits, days possibly
weeks after. The acting is superb, the story totally unique - you don't want
it to ever end. I stopped trying to figure it out and just let it happen because
it was much smarter than I. Brilliant performance by Cage (shoulda won the oscar);
Streep proves she's still the best film actress today; and Cooper charms you
right into loving his character. A must see movie. Whew! |

Johnny Depp and Tim Burton - it's gotta be a strange but intriguing movie right?
Right. The story of Ed Wood - actor, producer, and director - gives us a sense
of a good man, an interesting dresser and a visionary - even if his vision of
films didn't agree with those of, well almost everyone. Supported by a strong
cast of characters, black and white filming and a weirdness that Burton sets
up and Depp plays out this movie has you rooting for Wood. The man never gave
up and did receive recognition even if it wasn't along the lines of Orwell. |

If you ignore the total lack of plot and the stupid things this movie promotes
you can get a lot of laughs from this teenage action flick. If you are offended
by street racing, stealing, violence and racial stereotyping you may not get
any enjoyment from watching this movie. But if you want to see what the kids
are talking about check it out. You may learn something and you'll certainly
see some souped up cars. And, weren't all your youth movies rejected by your
parents? I'm not saying it's right but it is so overdone that it is funny. |

I see Cynthia Stevenson and Philip Seymour Hoffman and I know I'm going to like
the movie. Not so fast. Like is a kind gentle word and this is no kind gentle
movie. It's strange, honest, dark, shocking and totally believeable - and actually,
it is gentle and kind also. Rarely do movies give every actor equal time to develop
their character but this one does - and that's a tall order for some. I'm not
sure what I felt at the end of this movie but I don't think it was happiness. |

A feast for the eyes but a famine for your sense of storyline. I wanted to like
this movie but it just got on my nerves. The story of a little servant girl who,
after living amongst a family with a loving mother type, a bad little boy type
and a kind sister servant type, becomes the servant of a young, rich, handsome
composer. And guess what? He leaves his beautiful fiance for this servant, teaching
her to read and the finer points of life in the rich lane. Yeah right. Although
it was nominated for an Oscar move on over to Eat Drink Man Woman and get it
all. |

Ang Lee does it again. A movie that gives you that Mike Nichols feeling. A poignant
story of a father and three daughters coming to terms with change. Beautifully
shot this film shows that the trials of family life are universal and things
don't always turn out as planned. Both parents and children can surprise each
other. But with good food, little announcements, and the unveiling of family
secrets this family manages to handle change quite well - as most families seem
to do after the fire works are over. |

Mixing the old story of a one night stand with a story of a friend dying of AIDs
is an unusual idea at best. This movie doesn't pretend to be something it's not,
which is mildly interesting, and only succeeds at that due to the quality of
the actors. |

Too bad Cuba Gooding had to get involved with this movie. You think this movie's

a superficial level and you have a hard time feeling any sympathy for the main

Bad, bad, bad. Bad everything - acting, writing, effects, music. Can't complain
about the story line because they forgot to include one. Stuart Townsend gives
a good Johnny Depp impression that held my attention for a few seconds. |

If it wasn't for James Coburn and Mick I would say keep away from this dud. Andy
Garcia is the poorest excuse for a gigolo ever to hit the screen. Who would get
turned on by this bumbling, sad and boring man? And what does his faithful wife
think he's doing all those nights away from home and family? This movie is bad,
really bad except for the lively Coburn and the mighty Jag. If there's nothing
else and you can keep your expectations low get this movie and shut it off after
the funeral. |

I saw this movie many years ago and it's been stuck in a back corner of my brain
ever since. It's a movie of three stories all centring on inhabitants of the same
hotel in Memphis, Tennessee. A young Japanese couple on a rock and roll pilgrimage,
two women, with their own men problems, who meet in the hotel and lastly a story
that involves all the characters briefly and a violent drinking spree. Crime,
weirdness and black humour mix in this tale of foreigners in a legendary American
setting. |

Ever since Body Double I've really liked Polanski movies. It's too bad about this
one. This movie almost comes together but never really does. It's overly drawn
out and while the acting is good the characters never really get to stretch into
their roles. While it's got the signature Polanski twist, this film seems more
like a film that wants to be a Polanski movie and just can't quite figure out
the secret. I know I'm more forgiving with lesser movies, but this one fails to
meet the standard of a RP film. Get Ninth Gate instead. |

The second of the Matrix trilogy filled with action, great action!, and some very
cool moments. Although the plot was thin (Fishburne's speech for yawn example),
I would see it again for Keanu and the suit man, the Oracle, the restaurant scene,
and CAM taking the keymaker for a bike ride. Did we mention that Ducati is the
official motorcycle of GoTofino.com ? This movie is still the thinking person's
action flick of the time. |

Even though Kathy Bates, Jennifer Jason Leigh and Christopher Plummer are more
than enough to draw me to a movie I held off seeing Dolores Claiborne - why -
because it was written by Stephen King and well, you know. Stupid me. This is
a movie that defines the word chick flick - strong, self-reliant women who live
through hell and come out swinging. This movie has some powerful one liners in
it that I now live my life by. Enough said. |

Creepy indeed with solid performances from the actors. Hopkins and Fiennes are
totally believable as psychotic killers and Norton (sigh) is good as the in sync
detective. Philip Seymour Hoffman retains his favourite actor status playing a
weaselling journalist. While the movie was well done it was so slick that I remembered
it was just a movie and no nightmares followed. |

the film is a visual feast, a triumph of acting and a study of 50's film making.
The life of these upscale whites seem shallow but the emotions and fitting inside
the box remind us that living in the 50's was no picnic. Pass the daiquiris and
relax for a slow trip into the weird and normal past. |

If you are really bored or need a nothing movie to work-out to you could watch
this movie. Zeta-Jones is perfect as a spoiled me-me-me actress, Crystal and Green
are good as the publicists keeping the story going, and Tucci and Walken are fun.
The stars seem to be having a good time and it's kind of fun to watch. Just don't
expect much humour or an interesting story and you'll be fine. |

brilliant movies that will get made that otherwise wouldn't have a chance. Remember
when we supported indie music - Nirvana anyone? If you don't like this movie,
think of it as an investment. Note: Kaufman screenwriter for Being JM, Human Nature

end of the movie. She also stars in The Bourne Identity with Matt Damon. |

For a noir look at our possible future comes this Spielberg-Cruise thriller. While
I didn't find the plot did anything to stimulate the mind, the futuristic scenes
were thought provoking. This film blends belief in the system, a belief in choice
and the belief in one's self with both violence and, oddly enough, humour. Cruise's
acting is perfection as usual, but Samantha Morton as one of the pre-cogs sets
the psychological tension. |

of cinematic art. |

Thriller with a good story. While I would have liked more tension throughout the
film (Paxton doesn't quite have the Hitchcock touch yet), it was a twisted plot
that took me by surprise. Bill Paxton and McConaughey get top billing but the
acting of 13 year old Matthew O'Leary as the young Fenton carried the story. Lots
of questions arise out of this film and both young actors deserve credit as the
key to this movie. |

and you may enjoy it But if you want real spunk pick up a copy of Shirley Valentine. |

Jackie gives us a new look at Westerns that makes much more sense than the rootin'
tootin' gun slinger versions. Teamed up with Owen Wilson this buddy movie is not
afraid to go where no other buddy movie goes - Native woman coming to the rescue,
men falling into a bathtub together and the slave Chinese labour used to build
the railroad to name a few. Topped off, of course, by great marital arts, this
film is another Jackie classic. |

Banff Film Festival 2002

Caught the Banff Film Festival offerings on the Sunshine Coast. While it had one
uplifting story about a man who lost his legs and a fine first effort by a local
15 year old Coaster, the overall effect was one of disappointment. The trip through
Borneo seemed macho and disrespectful to the aboriginals, the white water kayaking
- seen it, the Tibet one posed and was more like a commercial than anything else.
Compared to last year's extravaganza this year is a bust. |

Insomnia

Al Pacino, Hilary Swank, Robin Williams, Martin Donovan
A good story with two interesting main characters. The insomnia of Pacino adds
to this story of a murder of a young woman in Alaska (although keep your eyes
open because it was shot in BC). Al Pacino plays well as a strung out cop heading
up the case and running from his own demons. Robin Williams was downright creepy
as a mystery writer based in the small Alaskan town. The problem was with Hilary
Swank playing the intrepid rookie cop - she looked far too Hollywood to be believable
and that one bad casting decision ruined the experience for me. Too bad - it had
all the makings of a pretty good movie. |

To quote the Austin Chronicle - "drug-fueled, nihilistic, free-for-all ride
through the streets and alleys of modern-day Swansea, South Wales". If you
watch this movie with the attitude that the above can be fun - you're ready. It's
a fast and furious ride with two brothers who don't really care for that much
- except keeping a wish of their Dad's. I liked this movie and if the drugs and
weirdness don't get to you, you might like it too. Others are split with lots
of critics giving it a miss and lots of friends thinking it is a fun ride. |

What a great movie! Ben Affleck and Samuel L Jackson play two men finding out
exactly what they are made of. And just like life they are both good - and bad,
right - and wrong. I never knew which way this movie was about to turn because
it never turned towards the predictable. Two men, different backgrounds, anger,
questions and their version of doing the right thing. The casting is well done
with actors fitting their roles perfectly. A must-see movie. |

Danny DeVito brings a great sense of humour to this movie. Grab your popcorn and

Native and non-native elders, environmentalists and retired loggers and corporates.
Heather Frise and Velcrow Ripper's 1996 Genie Award-winning documentary about
peoples' relationship with the land. Recording without commentary gives this film
an honesty that is refreshing. Bones of the Forest offers an illuminating look
at what has gone on, and is going on, in BC forests. |

Robert De Niro and Ed Norton together make for a very good movie. And Marlon Brando
even at 300 odd pounds still has it. Keep your eye on the prize. |

Erin Brockovich

Julia Roberts, Albert Finney, Scarlett Pomers, Aaron Eckhart,
Saw this the other night on TV. It's still as inspiring as the first time. A Silkwood
for these times with a happier ending — although many people got very sick
due to corporation greed and lies. Good one to remind us that this goes on every
day and usually the corporations get away with killing people for no reason and
very little questions are raised or compensation paid. It's up to all of us to
be vigilant in our watch and speak with our purchasing dollars. |

This story of a bicycle and two young men in China has won praise from many critics.
I found the film repetitive and never really felt involved. Nominated for 5 of
Taiwan's Golden Horse Award's and Winner of the Grand Jury Prize (Silver Bear)
and New Talent Award (Cui Lin and Li Bin) at the Berlin International Film Festival.
Obviously others saw a lot more than I did. Beautifully shot in the streets of
Beijing. |

Truth About Cats & Dogs

It's light, it's romantic, it's got footage that I fast-forwarded through but
it's also got three solid performances. Think Cyrano de Bergerac and you've got
the idea, change the main characters to females and you're there. I admit to liking
all three characters even though I cringed through some of the situations. And
seeing sultry Uma Thurman in a light role where she smiles a lot and acts the
empty-headed model-but-true-friend to perfection is a treat. |

Two sisters who couldn't be more different. One a successful singer, husband,
children, living in the family home. The other a struggling singer dealing with
addictions and all that comes with it. While this is not a happy movie I liked
it - the acting was very good and while you could see people on all sides to trying
to make things right it just didn't work. Just like real life. Kudos to the two
actresses who make this movie work. |

couple celebrating their anniversary. Reminded me of those parties where close
friends get together - good things happen, bad things happen but a coming together
in some way at the end reminds us that we are friends through it all. |

Very light story about a movie taking over a small town. Good movie to watch if

as the actors seem to (which is not very) you'll enjoy it. I do like Hoffman.

Sean Penn takes Friedrich Dürrenmatt's detective novella "The Pledge" and
makes a movie that is both subtle and hard hitting. Yes, it does play like a
very good student movie but in the world of slick Hollywood productions that
can be a relief. An all-star cast adds to the integrity of the film. Cameos by
Vaness Redgrave, Benicio Del Torro, Harry Dean Stanton, Mickey Rouke, Sam Shepard.
Addendum to this - went hiking the Stein by Lillooet and when we stopped for
gas I thought something looked earily familiar - it was the gas station used
in the Pledge and it's kept it's move persona. So if you've ever up there, look
for it. |

Let me say this right off the bat - I don't especially like Keanu Reeves as an
actor. But he was great as a violent red neck. Who would have thought? And that's
all I liked about The Gift. Cate Blanchet gives a credible performance as a fragile
clairvoyant, but the plot is thin, too thin. I found the some scenes cheap and
sensational in a tabloid way and the characters underdeveloped. |
