He was the expert here and his surf reports are the best and we wish him well.
We'll do our best to keep up his tradition of giving you the wave reports.

October 2-9 Tofino Surf Report
|
The surf should be solid this week. It looks like the falls swells have definitely
come to town, so we should be in for some good surfing conditions. If you're
planning on renting equipment, talk to the rentals shops. In the case that the
swell is over 9.5 feet, conditions apply to renting which might mean you'll only
be able to surf certain beaches, if you're able rent at all. This week looks
like everything should be okay, so enjoy.
Conditions
Thursday looks like 8.5 feet West swell at 12 seconds, with hardly any wind at
2mph east. Friday and Saturday swells look to be a little smaller at 7 feet West
at 11 seconds, with 6-9mph winds. Sunday shows 10ft West at 10 seconds with a
10mph west wind, and Monday swells read 8.5 feet West at 11 seconds and a nice
4mph west wind. After that, it looks like the swell will drop off for Tuesday. |
September 25 - October 2 Tofino Surf Report
|
This week looks like there will definitely be some strong waves hitting the shores.
Tuesday to Friday look to be the smallest days of the week, with a medium sized
swell. As for the weekend, it looks like the swell will pick up and bring some
big waves to the beaches. Winds should increase for the weekend.
Conditions
Tuesday reads 6ft West at 12 seconds, with 8mph West winds, Wednesday and Thursday
look like 5ft West at 9 seconds with 8mph West winds. A slight increase for Friday
at 6.5ft West at 9ft and 13mph west winds. For Saturday the swell picks up to
an 8.5ft South swell at 6 seconds, and unfortunately brings a 23mph south wind,
possibly with rain and dark clouds. Sunday looks like 11.5ft SW at 9 seconds
with a 6mph SW wind, and Monday looks to be 10ft W at 13 seconds with 10mph south
winds. |

September 18-25 Tofino Surf Report
|
The surf at the moment is small, but should be building all week and should
have some size to it. It looks like Monday should have the biggest swell of the
week, but Friday to Tuesday should all have a wave. Along with the waves however,
there should be some fairly strong winds picking up and blowing onshore. The
water's been pretty cold, so I'd suggest wearing booties.
Conditions
Wednesday and Thursday are looking like 3.5ft at 8 seconds, until a swell comes
on Friday at 5ft. This swell will build up to around 7ft for Saturday and Sunday,
then pick up again to 11ft for Monday. The period will stick around 10-12 seconds,
and the wind should be dropping a little for Monday. |
September 11-18 Tofino Surf Report
|
The surf's been coming through with fairly small swells that have fortunately
been producing some good surf. This week should be really fun, as the wind is
at a minimum, making for smooth conditions. All week should have a really playful
little wave and look for an increase in wave size on Sunday.
Conditions
Tuesday to Saturday look to be around 3-4ft West swell, with a 10 second period.
Wind this week looks to be below 10mph and coming mainly from a south direction,
which will make for some clean surf, and afternoons that aren't totally choppy.
On Sunday the swell bumps up to 6ft and stays around for a couple days. Expect
lots of sun along with the surf. |
August 28 - September 4 Tofino Surf Report
|
Tofino's been hit with some solid swells this week, and it looks like it'll
continue to pump on the shores. The swells appear to decrease a little for the
weekend before a huge south west swell hits on Monday. It should stick around
for a couple days. Surf's up!
Conditions
Thursday/Friday show 4.5ft West swell at 8 seconds, Saturday will decrease to
4ft at 8 seconds, while Sunday drops a foot in swell and goes up to a 15 second
period. When the southwest swell hits it will hit at 8ft 9 seconds, while Tuesday
increases to 9.5ft at 9 seconds. Wind will vary all week, but shouldn't be too
heavy, staying at 5-10mph. |
August 21-28 Tofino Surf Report
|
There should definitely be surf this week. It might be small at times, but
the swell is solid for summer. Hopefully it sticks around for a while and a flat
spell doesn't hit us again. North Chesterman's has been getting some waves, as
well as Cox and Long Beach.
Conditions
There's a west swell all week long, at 5ft on Wednesday, 4ft Thursyda, 3.5ft
Friday, up to 5ft for the weekend, then back down a foot for the beginning
of next week. The swell period is from 10 seconds on Wednesday/Thursday, to 9
seconds the rest of the week. The wind is west all week, with windier days
from Thursday to Sunday. The wind shouldn't be too crazy though, and the surf
should be peeling. |
16 August Update:
Since the last report on Tuesday, the swell has seemed to do a complete
180. The 13ft swell that was forecasted is gone, with the
swell jumping to 4.5ft Friday, then going down to 3.5ft and 2ft for
Saturday/Sunday, and raising a foot a day till Wednesday. From today
till Monday it looks like a South swell at around 7 seconds over the weekend,
and 10 seconds at the beginning of next week. Nontheless, there should still
be a decent wave. Try South Chesterman and Cox. |
August 14-21 Tofino Surf Report
|
The swell is small now, and for the next few days. There should be calm
waters with some smooth set waves coming in. Definitely good for first time and
novice surfers to learn on. On Friday, a new swell will bring bigger waves and
wind for the whole weekend. Sunday is expected to be just about as big as the
biggest summer swell will get. Hold onto your boards!
Conditions
Tuesday is 2.5ft West at 8 seconds, and a 6mph south wind. Wednesday looks like
2ft SSW at 14 seconds and a 6mph west wind. Thursday shows the same as Tuesday.
Friday is 5ft SSW at 6 seconds and 12mph south winds. Saturday at 4.5ft SSW,
6 seconds, and 21mph south winds. Sunday shows 13ft WSW at 11 secs with 20mph
south wind. Monday the swell dies down a bit to 9ft W at 9 seconds and 10mph
West winds. |
August 7-14 Tofino Surf Report
|
This week there should definitely be a wave, with periods of light wind,
and even offshore winds making for smooth, glassy conditions. The swells aren't
the biggest, but there should be some surf around, so check out the local beaches,
grab a board, and if you don't have a car, check the Tofino Bus schedules, which
leave for the beaches frequently and have board racks.
Conditions
Tuesdays starts off at 3.5ft WNW swell at 8 seconds, with winds from 6mph in
the morning, to 13mph later in the day. The swell should raise slightly to 4ft
for Wednesday until dropping slowly throughout the week. The weekend brings a
new swell at 2.5ft at 16 seconds, which should mean great beginner surf, nice
wave intervals, and occasional big sets and winds changing to a south, and east
direction. |
July 31 - August 7 Tofino Surf Report
|
The surf should be tiny to small/medium height this week. The weekend is
calling for a pickup in swell, so we'll have to keep our fingers crossed. As
usual, check out South Chesterman, Cox, or Long Beach. There should definitely
be some good beginner waves, and some sun shining. Be sure and put those boards
face down so your wax doesn't melt, or your soft top doesn't bubble.
Conditions.
Today is 4ft, with the swell dropping for Wednesday, Thursday and Friday to around
3.5ft, with a slight pickup for the weekend at 4.5ft. The swell is coming from
a SSE direction at 13 seconds on tuesday, but other than that it should be mostly
a west swell, with periods in the 7-9 second range. Winds blowing from the West,
at an average of 12mph. |
July 24-31 Tofino Surf Report
|
This week should bring good wave conditions to all beaches. This last weekend
saw the waves form really nicely, and hopefully this week will have solid conditions
as well. The swell is medium height, and the sun is out. Should be fun times
at the beach.
Conditions
There's a 5ft West swell all week long, at around a 10 second period. Expect
some windy conditions in the day, and maybe some glassy conditions in the morning
and evening, as the wind is forecasted to drop off almost completely at times.
Wind is predicted to be West till Saturday when turning South, then back to West
at the start of next week. |
July 17-24 Tofino Surf Report
|
So far the waves have been tiny. Expect a slight increase over the next
couple days, until the bigger swell comes over the weekend. Right now South Chesterman's
has been bringing in a surfable wave for all the longboarders and I've also heard
Long Beach has a small wave. Don't let the small waves discourage you though
- get wet. There's no time wasted while in the water.
Conditions
Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday will have small waves with a 2ft, 2.5ft, and
3.5ft swell height respectively. A 6.5ft, 7 second south swell should hit on
Saturday, increasing to 7.5ft for Sunday, then going down to 6ft on Monday. The
winds vary greatly, but it looks like Saturday, and Monday will have the best
wind conditions at 6mph. There's a strong east wind at 17mph on Sunday. |
July 3-10 Tofino Surf Report
|
All you wave junkies, make sure you get out in the water this week. The
swells are here, and should bring in some good waves. Cox Bay and Long Beach
are going to have the biggest wave, but check out South Chesterman, and maybe
even North for some waves as well. Chesterman's should be a good beginner wave
this week. It looks like the sun's back too, so get out the lotion and beach
hats. Wear heavy sunblock, as glare off the water can be extremely intense.
Conditions
Swells for Wednesday to Friday 6ft, 5ft, and 4.5ft respectively, while the period
is at 8 seconds. On Saturday a new swell will come at 4ft with a higher period
of around 14 seconds. Going into the week days, swell is forecasted to pick up,
with the period decreasing as well. Winds looking all West Northwest at fairly
high speeds - around 15mph. |
June 26 - July 3 Tofino Surf Report
|
Well Kids, don't expect anything too heavy this week. It looks like it will
be small, and on the verge of tiny, especially on the weekend. Check out Long
Beach this weekend, it should have a great beach vibe, and hopefully some nice
waves.
Conditions
The swells are hovering around 2-4ft, with Saturday and Sunday being 2.5 and
2ft respectively. Thursday is 4ft at 9 seconds, dropping to 3.5ft, 6 seconds
for Friday. After the weekend, swells are rising slightly from 2ft to 4ft for
Monday at 6 seconds. The only good news for conditions is the winds, which are
south, southeast all week long at around 9mph. If the surf is small, it might
at least be clean. |
June 19-26 Tofino Surf Report
|
It looks like the waves will be small for much of this coming week with
medium swell height from Wednesday to Saturday. Today is small, with long intervals,
while the next few days will get a lot more, bigger waves breaking on all beaches.
Try Cox Bay, South Chesterman and Long Beach.
Conditions
Swell height for today is small, at 2.5ft. However the period is at 15 seconds,
so there should be some sets rolling through calm waters. Wednesday through Saturday
show 5-6 feet, with lower periods, around 7-9 seconds. Swell height drops on
Sunday to 3.5ft with a 7 second period, and continues through to Monday. Winds
look all south this week, from 8-14mph, but I'm sure there'll be times with minor
wind speeds. Should make for glassy rides. |
June 12-19 Tofino Surf Report
|
Last weekend saw some huge waves, making Cox Bay virtually unsurfable,
and North heat up in the clutch. This week will be smaller. Nevertheless, the
swell doesn't look like it will completely fade. It looks like there will be
solid medium surf, and hopefully a nice wave for this weekend's Rip Curl Stew
surf contest at Cox Bay. Keep your fingers crossed.
Conditions
Showing 6-7ft West swell at 9 seconds with low southerly winds till Thursday.
Friday is looking like 3.5ft, while Saturday and Sunday show 4.5ft all at a 7
second period with West winds in the 10-15mph range. |
June 5-12 Tofino Surf Report
|
This week might have a lot of choppy periods due to solid swells and high
winds. The swell looks like it's going to be small before the weekend, leading
into big surf for the weekend and Monday. Long Beach and Cox will probably have
a wave, as well as South Chesterman. If waves get through to North Chesterman,
then it could be a nice and mellow. Expect North to pick up over the weekend
and through to Tuesday.
Conditions
West swells on an 8-10 second period. 4.5-6 foot swells from Wednesday to Saturday,
and 11 feet for Sunday and Monday. Showing 23mph winds for Wednesday, calming
down to 10-15mph through the rest of the week.

May 29 - June 5 Tofino Surf Report
|
If you hit the right beaches at the right times last week, you would've
seen some nice swells hit the beaches of Tofino. The waves have really been peeling.
Today, Tuesday, looks like it's going to be the smallest day of the week, maybe
a good day to try Cox Bay. The rest of the week looks like classic, medium summer
surf with mid-range wind speeds. The weekend looks like it might be a little
smaller, but with bigger periods. It could stay consistent, and translate into
good waves. As for the comments last week about wetsuit gear and staying warm,
maybe that was a bit premature, especially when out in the morning waters. I
should've really emphasize the "if you want to stay warm" part. I recommend
hood and boots, and gloves in the morning.
Conditions
The swell size this week averages at around 4-6 feet at 10 seconds with the lower
swells being at the start of the week, and the weekends. Wednesday, Thursday
and Monday show a solid 6 to 6.5 feet with 9 to 10 second periods. The period
looks like its going to increase over the weekend, possibly making up for the
lesser swell height. Winds will increase as each day progresses, being
around 3-8mph in the morning, and 10-15mph in the afternoons, mostly coming from
the west, and northwest. |

May 22-29 Tofino Surf Report
|
|
I hope everyone had a good May long weekend and caught some
nice rides. This week, the surf looks likes it's going to be a little lighter
than the weekend, with swells dropping to a medium height. Hopefully we
will see an easy inside section, and some smooth conditions for playful waves. The
water is getting warmer and people are out now without gloves, boots, and hood. If
you want to stay fully warm though, like I do, I suggest a hood and boots.
May 24: Happy Birthday Buddha. Long Beach
is very sweet this week.
May 23: Some nice small waves in the evening
at south Chesterman, perfect for longboard riding or practising turns as a lot
of riders were doing.
Conditions
Tuesday shows a small West swell and 7 second period. Wednesday has the
same swell, although Southwest with an 18 second period. Swell picks up
on thursday with West swells at 6 feet, until levelling off at around 5 foot
at a 9 second period for the rest of the week. Wednesday through Friday
shows light winds, which will be picking up to 10-15mph over the weekend. |
|
| May 15-22 Tofino Surf Report |
|
This week shows signs of good summer surf, beginners and intermediates
will enjoy the wave conditions. The week's swell starts with a nice small wave,
following with some bigger conditions for the May long weekend. Be sure to cover
all body parts in the cold water. You might be able to get by without gloves
though, if you don't mind your hands being a little numb!
May 21: Long beach was a good option this
morning. Getting there early is a good idea because there weren't many there
when we arrived early but when we quit the parking lot was packed.
May 20: If you're surfing today, South
Chesterman is a good spot to check out. Some nice glassy waves there this morning.
Conditions
Tuesday shows a 4-5ft swell at a 10 second period with winds moving to the east
at 10 mph. Through the week, swell height will rise a little for Wednesday, with
a small decrease in swell and period for Thursday and Friday, before picking
up to a 10ft swell at an 11 second period on Sunday with 3 mph northern winds. |
|
| May 10-15 Tofino Surf Report |
|
This week the surf is looking small, with some beaches being
not much more than a ripple. Pick your beach carefully. Cox Bay and Long
Beach will be your best bet, and there might be a wave coming through to South
Chesterman, which is always a fun beginner wave. This is a good time to practice
your paddling and pop ups, and have fun in the small surf. |
|

There's surf in Tofino for everyone.
Whether you're a beginner or a professional
it's all about having fun and hanging together.
