Chesterman Beach, Tofino, British Columbia
is a favorite for surfing. Whether you are a seasoned veteran or novice
this is the place to be! The Dolphin Motel is just a few minutes drive or
about a five minute walk to Chesterman Beach with its open Pacific Ocean waves.
There are always surfers catching waves near Frank Island and along the beach
and everyone is friendly and welcoming. Chesterman Beach is just north of Long
Beach and is on the border of Pacific Rim National Park.
Bring your own gear or visit the nearby surf shop. They can cater to your every
need and give you lessons and advice about where the waves are. Wetsuits are always
worn and in the winter — when the waves are at their biggest — gloves,
booties and head coverings are a must. In the summer you can surf you heart out
then bask on the warm sand afterwards. Chesterman Beach is also a popular place
for kayak surfers.
Summer: In summer the water at Chesterman
Beach is warm enough for swimming and you can plan to spend the whole day at the
beach. Chesterman Beach is long enough for a good walk and the sand by the water's
edge is hard enough for jogging. Strolling the beach, making sand castles, watching
the surfers, picnicking, reading or catching up with friends or family are all
wonderful ways to take in your time in Tofino. In the evening watch the sunset,
then head back to the Dolphin Motel for a BBQ.
Whalewatching is in full swing from March to September. The Dolphin Motel office
can provide you with information and brochures. Bird-watching is also an
important part of Tofino activities. Resident
and transient birds are plentiful including eagles, herons, puffins, hummingbirds,
and sandpipers. The Dolphin Motel is also located by a popular waterfowl watching
area. During migration times areas of Tofino are full of transient birds as they
stop to refuel for their long trips.
Fall, Winter and Early Spring:
Fall, winter and early spring are ideal times for West Coast Storm Watching. The
winter storm photograph above is of the Lennard Island Lighthouse and taken from
Frank Island on Chesterman Beach. Visitors and locals alike bundle up in warm
clothes and gather to watch the powerful waves toss and turn in the winter surf.
A day watching the wild winter storms really builds an appetite for Tofino's renowned
cuisine. Just a few minutes drive from the Dolphin Motel is the village of Tofino
where you can take your pick of fine restaurants.
