Recyclable Glass
Unfortunately, glass is not part of the recycling program
in Tofino.
Have you been saving recyclable glass (pickle jars, sauce jars, oil bottles
etc.) around the house and are running out of space? Do what a lot of people do. Save your glass and take it out when you leave town to recycling facility that does offer glass recycling. Have friends visiting - as them to take your glass to their home if they have a recycling centre that offer glass recycling. See below in Common Recycling Questions for why glass is not collected in the ACRD.
Recycling Containers
The Regional District provides two re-usable plastic bags.
Permanently mark your street address on each bag.
Need an additional container?
Just grab another container and mark it 'Recyclable Materials'.
Any container can be used: another strong bag or a garbage can - just make sure
it's marked.

Recycling
The Ucluelet Secondary School will recycle cell phones and printer cartridges. You may drop either of those items off in Tofino at Tofino Sea Kayaking (320 Main Tofino, BC) or the Ucluelet Secondary School office (1450 Peninsula, Ucluelet, BC).
Where do I put the recycling boxes? Place your boxes alongside your garbage can.
What if I need more boxes? Yellow recycling stickers can be obtained from the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District office at 3008 Fifth Avenue. These stickers can be affixed to additional boxes (i.e., Rubbermaid tote, 80 litre garbage can) to identify it as a recycling box. The additional containers must not exceed 44lbs. Additional Blue Boxes can be purchased from the Alberni-Clayoquot Regional District of at the cost of $15 each, or at many hardware stores.
What materials can I recycle? Cardboard (non-waxed), Boxboard, Mixed Paper, Newspaper, Plastics (Numbers 1,2,4, & 5 and plastic bags), metals (tin and foils). ALL materials must be clean and free of food residual. Plastic bags should be all placed together in one bag and tied off.
Pizza Boxes? Can they be recycled? The bottom portion of the pizza box will be soiled and cannot be recycled. If the top portion is clean and free of oil and food debris, it may be placed in the blue box.
Is there anything we cannot recycle? Glass and Styrofoam are not included in the program. Food soiled items, batteries, yard waste. These items can be brought to locations that will recycle them. Please see the 'Everything Else' Materials List for locations to deposit these items.
Why is glass not accepted? Glass causes safety hazards to the staff collecting and sorting recyclable material. Glass can also contaminate other materials. There are no viable markets for glass collected through the recycling program. Deposit or refundable glass containers such as juice, wine, beer and liquor bottles can be returned to the bottle depot for a refund.
Is there anything in particular I should do with my plastic bags? All plastic grocery bags and plastic film should be cleaned and placed inside a grocery bag and tied off. Make sure the receipt has been removed from the bag.
Is there a limit on how many recyclable materials I am able to put out? There is no limit but containers must be 80L or less and weigh less than 44 pounds each.
My recycling was not picked up? Check to see if it is your Recycling Pick-up week. If it is, please call Sun Coast Waste at (250) 720-2161 (Alberni Valley), or Sonbird Refuse & Recycling at (250) 720-4406 (West Coast).
What happens to the materials I put in my blue box? Your materials are transported to Vancouver Island Recycling in Nanaimo where they are sorted and sent to processing plants to be made into other products. Corrugated cardboard reappears as cereal boxes. Mixed paper is made into new boxboard products. Plastic can be recycled into shampoo bottles or plastic lumber.
Say No To Plastic
Canadians take home an estimated 55 million plastic bags per week. This is a total of over 2.86 billion bags per year.
This creation of plastic bags contributes to greenhouse gas emissions.
It is estimated that only 5% of all plastic bags get recycled: the rest end up in landfills or polluting the environment.

Earth-Friendly ProgramsCanada's Residential and Commercial Thermostat Exchange Program
Administered by the Heating, Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Institute of Canada (HRAI), and supported by the Canadian Institute of Plumbing and Heating (CIPH), the Switch the 'Stat program works with heating and cooling contractors and wholesalers to encourage the installation of energy-efficient programmable thermostats, while simultaneously diverting the older mercury-containing and electronic thermostats from landfill. Switching to newer and more energy-efficient programmable thermostats and responsibly disposing of older mercury-containing thermostats reduces energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, and prevents mercury from contaminating our air, soil, and water.
Used Oil Recycling in British Columbia
British Columbians have done an exceptional job of recycling used motor oil (79.3% recovery), oil filters (85.5%) and oil containers (88.3%). But when you consider that a single litre of used oil can contaminate a million litres of ground water it is clear that more needs to be done. Please ensure every drop of used oil, every filter and every container is brought to a collection facility during regular business hours so it can be disposed of properly. Most of these collection facilities will now also accept used antifreeze and antifreeze containers.
Battery Recycling Program
Residents and organizations in British Columbia and Manitoba can now recycle all household batteries including alkalines or single-use batteries weighing less than 11 lbs/5 kg.
