Morpheus Island lies just off Tofino. It’s a short paddle from downtown or a quick boat ride. The Morpheus Island Cemetery has 44 people buried there. Many old names you’ll see around Tofino like Fred Tibbs, the Arnets, the Grices and many of the Japanese people who called Tofino home, like Kimoto and Komatsu.
The rainforest on Morpheus Island is reclaiming the cemetery that is in this clearing.
Some of the graves are still visible and are not yet overgrown.
The iron cage is used to protect the special objects inside from damage by falling tree limbs.
Many Japanese-Canadians who lived in Tofino are buried at the Morpheus Island Cemetery.

Not as well known as Père Lachaise, the Morpheus Island Cemetery is a special place in Tofino.

Put in your kayak at First Street Dock or join a kayak tour. Paddle out through the Tofino harbour to Morpheus Island. Watch for tide changes and currents in the channel but not a difficult paddle at all.
